Style transfer is an AI technique that applies the visual style of one image — its colors, textures, and brushwork — onto the content and structure of another image.

How it works

Style transfer separates an image into two parts: content (what is in the picture — the shapes, objects, and arrangement) and style (how it looks — the palette, texture, and stroke patterns). The technique takes the content from your source image and the style from a reference, then synthesizes a new image that preserves the first while wearing the surface qualities of the second.

Early neural style transfer compared internal feature patterns from a vision network to match style statistics while holding content steady. Modern systems achieve the same effect through diffusion: a style preset, a reference image, or a descriptive prompt biases the generation so the output adopts a chosen aesthetic. The amount of styling can be tuned — light touches recolor and retexture, while strong settings can substantially reinterpret the scene.

Why it matters

Style transfer makes a consistent visual identity achievable at scale. A creator can render a whole set of images in one cohesive look — say, all illustrations in a single painterly style — without manually editing each one. It also unlocks fast creative exploration: the same subject can be previewed as oil paint, anime, low-poly, or cinematic film in seconds, which is hard and slow to do by hand. For brands and storytellers, that consistency is what makes a body of work feel intentional rather than random.

eaxy's 30+ style packs are a curated form of this idea: pick a look and your prompt is generated in that aesthetic, so a series of images shares one coherent style. You can keep the same subject and swap packs to see it reinterpreted instantly.

Frequently asked questions

What is style transfer used for?+

Turning a photo into the look of a painting, applying a consistent aesthetic across many images, or restyling artwork into a different medium — for example rendering a portrait as a watercolor or a city scene as a comic panel.

How is style transfer different from a style pack?+

A style pack is a curated preset that biases generation toward a look from the start. Classic style transfer takes an existing image and a separate style reference, then fuses them. Both aim for a consistent aesthetic; one is a built-in preset, the other reshapes a given image.

Does style transfer change the subject?+

It tries not to. The goal is to keep the content — the objects, layout, and composition — while replacing surface qualities like color palette, texture, and brushwork. Stronger settings can drift further from the original.
